What are Dental Implants?
Instead of looking to other healthy teeth to help hold prosthetics in place, dental implants rely only on the vacant socket left behind. Made of titanium, these posts are positioned within the jawbone and mimic the function of tooth roots. Delivering continuous stimulation to this area of the face, patients can expect a more youthful aesthetic while also reaping the benefits of a longer-lasting, durable, and stable smile.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – A scheduled consultation with Dr. L?berg must occur to ensure that an individual is cleared for dental implant surgery. If signs of decay, gum disease, or bone resorption are evident, appropriate preliminary treatment must first occur.
- Dental Implant Surgery – As an implant dentist, Dr. L?berg will place each dental implant into its corresponding location using the digital images captured by a cone beam scanner.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Once the surgery is complete, the gum tissue will be used to cover the implants. This allows the implant to fuse with the bone, creating a firm bond within 4-6 months. After this time, a patient will return to our dental office to receive their metal abutments, which requires another small procedure.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – After a person’s mouth is fully healed from surgery, they will receive their custom restoration, which may be a crown, bridge, or denture.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dr. L?berg will go over the plethora of benefits that come with choosing dental implants during the initial consultation. Although some may be more obvious, others may cause many individuals to be surprised. Some of these benefits include:
- Greater bite force and chewing power
- Prevention of bone loss in the jaw
- A reduced risk of needing orthodontic intervention in the future because of the prevention of dental drift
- Greater confidence in one’s appearance
- 30+ year average lifespan
Who Dental Implants Can Help
Patients missing multiple teeth, an entire arch, or even a single tooth will find that dental implants can be a suitable solution. We can evaluate each individual to determine which of the following approaches is right for them.
Missing One Tooth
Only one missing tooth can be replaced using a single titanium implant post, a metal abutment, and a customized dental crown. By using this method, we avoid using healthy teeth as anchors and restore someone’s appearance by filling in the gap left behind.
Missing Multiple Teeth
Using only two implant crowns on either end of a gap, the remaining teeth rest on top of the gums. Although each crown is not connected to an implant, the two on the ends continue to deliver stimulation to the jaw so that the bone will remain strong and stable over time.
Missing All of Your Teeth
While implant dentures use between four and six implants, All-On-4 only requires four implant posts. No matter which one a person chooses, though, the result is a stable, sturdy, and fully functional smile that allows for proper eating, speaking, and more confidence.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants
One of the most important factors a person can consider when choosing which type of treatment they prefer to replace their missing teeth is cost. It cannot be ignored that dental implants are more expensive than other, more traditional solutions, but the cost-savings in the long run are worth the initial investment. Our team at L?berg Dental Center is here to help patients navigate the complexities of dental insurance and make sure that all available benefits are maximized to reduce any out-of-pocket costs.
